This signature 5-day traverse is timed to July’s full moon: you climb the last frozen switchbacks to Point Lenana (4,985 m) by moonlight and reach the summit for a dual moonset and sunrise.
Ascending via the gradual Sirimon route ensures the safest acclimatisation. Descending via Chogoria — the mountain’s most scenic route — takes you past the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson viewpoints, Hall Tarns and Nithi Falls.
Three package tiers are available: Budget (camping), Standard (huts & bandas) and Luxury (premium glamping).
Drive to Nanyuki, register at Sirimon Gate (2,650 m), trek 9 km (3–4 hrs) through equatorial forest to Old Moses Camp (3,300 m). Short acclimatisation walk. Watch the July full moon rise. Dinner & overnight.
14 km, 6–7 hrs across the Ontulili River and Likii North ridge into alpine moorland and Mackinder Valley. Reach Shipton’s Camp (4,200 m) below the main peaks. Volcanic plugs glow silver under the moon.
Slow 3–4 hr walk to Hausberg & Oblong Tarns (4,570 m). Return for lunch, prepare gear, rest early for the midnight wake-up.
01:30 wake-up, 02:00 start. Climb the switchbacks by moonlight, summit Lenana (4,985 m) at 06:15 for dual moonset & sunrise. Descend via Chogoria past Gorges Valley to Meru Bandas (2,950 m). 17 km, 11–13 hrs total.
Relaxed breakfast, 10 km walk down through the rainforest (2 hrs). Meet transport at the forest gate for the drive back to Nairobi, arriving late afternoon.
