Route: Sirimon → Chogoria. The Sirimon entry is considered the most moderate gradient of the three main routes to Mt. Kenya, while Chogoria is the longest and most scenic — deep valleys, small lakes and a waterfall depending on your line.
Why this route earns a 100% recommendation: moderate ascent, Lenana peak summit, at least 5 small tarns (camping at Hall Tarns and Lake Ellis), and Nithi Falls. A wholesome package.
Mt. Kenya — “The Mountain of God” — is Africa’s second-highest peak at 5,199 m. Expect exotic equatorial high-altitude vegetation, deep valleys, Lenana sunrise, tarns, rivers, hyrax, zebras, buffalo and eagles.
Leave Nairobi 8am, equator stop at Nanyuki. Lunch at Sirimon Gate then 3 hr hike through equatorial forest to Old Moses Camp (3,300 m). Short acclimatisation walk up Shipton Route. Dinner & overnight.
Breakfast 06:00, hike 17 km / 6–8 hrs through giant heather and moorland to Shipton’s Camp (4,200 m). Light lunch mid-way. Short acclimatisation walk. Dinner & overnight.
02:30 light breakfast, 03:00 start. Summit Lenana (4,985 m) by 06:00 for sunrise and Conqueror’s View — Kilimanjaro visible 343 km south. Descend 4 hrs to Mintos Hut (4,100 m) at Hall Tarns; Temple Wall cliff and Lake Michaelson views.
Breakfast 07:00, hike 08:00 along the ridge overlooking Gorges Valley to Lake Ellis (4 hrs). Lunch and camp for the last mountain night.
07:00 breakfast, descend via Nithi Falls and Mau Mau caves to Chogoria Gate (4 hrs). Lunch on the road and back to Nairobi.
