Mount Lesatima, also known as Ol Donyo Lesatima, is the highest peak in the Aberdare Range and the third-highest mountain in Kenya.
The Shamata Gate approach features dramatic, jagged volcanic rock formations rising from the moorland, creating a distinctive alpine landscape.
The trek begins at a high moorland road-head, allowing hikers to spend extended time above 3,300m. The route is intended as preparation for climbing Mt. Kenya or Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The route crosses boggy moorlands populated by giant lobelias, groundsel, and tussock grasses.
Mount Lesatima provides high-altitude hiking preparation without requiring a multi-day expedition. The route introduces hikers to rocky, irregular, and often boggy moorland terrain found at higher alpine elevations.
