Mt. Elgon

An ancient extinct volcano with the world's largest caldera and salt-mining elephants.

Mt. Elgon straddles the Kenya–Uganda border, an ancient shield volcano whose caldera is one of the largest in the world. The Kenyan side rises through montane forest and bamboo to high moorland, with Koitobos peak at 4,222 m.

Famous for the elephants of Kitum Cave who tusk salt from the cave walls, plus waterfalls, hot springs and excellent multi-day trekking.
